Women in Beer: Alyssa Thorpe & Bridgette Geiger, Brewer & Sales/Events Director at Lone Tree Brewing
We had the pleasure of meeting Alyssa and Bridgette of Lone Tree Brewing last week to chat about their experience in the brewing industry. Each had such a unique story to tell as to what brought them to where they are today. Both Alyssa and Bridgette’s passion for craft beer and the community that surrounds it is undeniable. Keep reading to learn more about each of their stories!
Tell us a little more about yourself, and how you support the brewery.
B: I was a school teacher finishing a Masters in Educational Leadership. I found myself hanging out at a tap room with a brewery and became interested in learning more about the Craft Beer Industry. I started helping out with mashing out the mash tun (which meant I pulled spent grain into a trash can) and began home brewing. From there I volunteered at the Brewers Association and landed an Intern spot. After, I went on to help open a brewery and did a little brewing while working in the front of the house. From then on, I continued learning all I could and earned my Beer Judging Certification and passed the test to become a Certified Cicerone. I taught many beer certification classes, won many awards with my homebrew creations, developed a women-only beer club, (PMS), became an officer in a larger beer club, wrote articles about beer for many publications and started my own beer and cheese pairing company. I have also taken trips to Belgium to learn more about the art of creating amazing beer. Currently, I am a board member and head of sales for Lone Tree Brewing Company.
A: My Name is Alyssa, I have been a brewer at Lone Tree for a little over a year. I started professionally brewing 2 years ago and attended Regis Universities applied craft brewing program. I am originally from Texas. My husband and I moved here about 3 years ago and now live in Englewood with our little French Bulldog, Mochi. I love to hike, do yoga, eat and drink adventurously, and do anything creative!
Is there anyone, in particular, you’d like to do a collaboration with and why?
B: I am a big fan of Belgium Triples. It is my dream to someday brew at a monastery to really learn the secret of creating true Belgium Triples.
A: For me personally, I would love to collab with Scratch Brewing. I really love how they use the resources around them in the forest and strive to incorporate foraged ingredients into the beer they make. I find it very intriguing, and creative.
What advice would you give other women trying to get into the industry?
B: Start anywhere you can and don’t give up. Take in all that is offered to you. Volunteering is a great way to begin the journey.
A: My first bit of advice would be to just work your ass off. Push yourself to prove you can work as hard (or harder) than anyone else around you and don’t listen to someone who says “you can’t”. Second would be, learn as much as you can. Read all the books you can, homebrew and enter competitions, take knowledge when it’s given. If you have those things, everything else will fall into place.
Anything exciting coming up with Lone Tree that you can share with us?
B: I will let Alyssa take this one.
A: We have our annual Hop Zombie release coming up, it’s a GABF award-winning imperial red ale, with a ton of hops. It’s super delicious and dangerously easy to drink. I’m also really excited about our Oktoberfest this year. We brewed a traditional German lager that we will be serving in boots the day of. Ever since watching the movie Beer Fest I’ve always wanted to crush lager out of a boot (turn the boot!)

How long have you been brewing? What’s your favorite part about being a brewer?
A: As I mentioned above, I have been brewing professionally for about 2 years, and homebrewing for 3. I am a creative person, I’ve always been artistic growing up, but coming from a blue-collar family in the south, hard work and dedication is something to look up to. I feel like with brewing I can not only create something with my bare hands, but also know a lot of time, effort, and constant dedication goes into the final product.
What’s your favorite brewing experience/memory?
A: My best memory has to be when my husband and I brewed a traditional Pilsner as a homebrew. We had really basic equipment, but I really wanted to try out a triple decoction mash. It took a lot of time (and a lot of stirring) but ended up winning a competition to be at GABF in the pro-am portion with Black Project. It was that moment at the awards ceremony (even though we didn’t win) that I knew the next time I came back it was going to be as a professional brewer.
