WeldWerks Got Extra Creative This Year And We LOVE It!

WeldWerks brewing is taking the Colorado craft beer scene by storm. The already popular Greely local took their creativity to a new level this year. They launched an initiative to brew 100 new and different beers during the calendar year. Needless to say, these delicious beers have been wildly popular. Craft beer lovers from all around will drive hours just to sample some of their beer. Many also stock up and bring a lot of cans home with them!

We recently had the opportunity to visit their tasting room and sample a few of their latest releases. During our first visit, we tried their Strawberry Lemonade IPA and Salt of the Dog Gose. Our flight during the second visit included many of their new releases. We drank their Spaghetti Gose, Apricot Wheat, Evil Pastry Factory Stout, Coffee Blonde Stout, and Blood Orange Creamsicle Milkshake IPA. On the way out, we stocked up with their Conflict Resolution Sour Milkshake IPA and Brambleberry Sour during our first visit. We also enjoyed Juicy Bits, Chardonnay Brut, and many more that we brought home with us.

Intrigued to learn more about WeldWerks’ initiative, we reached out to learn more. We chatted with Jake Goodman, Director of Sales and Marketing, and Kristin Popcheff, Director of Operations, to hear more about their brewery and goal to brew 100 different beers this year.

What was the inspiration behind the initiative?

Oddly enough, it grew out of a casual conversation that took place after one of our planning meetings in late 2017. It was the morning-time, we were all properly caffeinated, and the conversation drifted towards what we thought the limiting factors of the brewing industry might be in 2018, followed by an impromptu mental exercise about how we would eschew those limitations if we were a brand-new brewery hitting the scene this year. It was more of a what-if/why-not sort of discussion that we slowly realized might actually have some legs.

What is the general consensus of the experience so far?

We have had an absolute blast with it! The process has birthed some of our most innovative beers to-date, and we’ve truly enjoyed engaging with our guests about the in’s-and-out’s of the various brews. As we near the end of the whole endeavor, we find ourselves being conscious of not wanting to fatigue folks with unnecessary choice, nor of making the process look superfluous, but otherwise it has been incredibly enjoyable.

I see that you’re at 89 releases and counting. What’s next on the release radar? Will WeldWerks continue creating new beers this year once the 100 beer target is met?

We are just a stone’s throw away from one of our favorite weeks of the year, which is the one leading-up to the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, and we’ll be releasing almost a dozen new beers between now and then, so “next” is a bit difficult to pin down. That said, yes we will continue a similar release schedule between now and 12.31.18, at which point we should be over 130 beers released in the calendar year.

Of the releases thus far, are there a few favorites you all have?

With such a divergent selection, it’s tough to get an overall consensus even among staff, but I think we have a lot of interest in continuing the “Milkshake” style of hazy New England IPA’s, which introduces lactose (milk sugar) and vanilla to create a creamy and decadent mouthfeel. Two of my personal favorites this year have come from this series – Pina Colada Milkshake (which recently took #1 in a national blind taste-test in Paste magazine) and Tropical Milkshake. Beyond that I think we’ve gotten a ton of pleasure from collaboration with our industry pals, ranging from a phenomenal New England-style Double IPA called “Transmountain Diversion,” made with our buddies at Casey Brewing & Blending in Glenwood Springs, to a rich, decadent barrel-aged imperial stout with maple and vanilla by the name of “Sweet Disposition,” done with the badasses at Mikerphone Brewing in Chicago, IL.

Will any of them be making a comeback next year?

Absolutely. While one of the massively fun parts of this year has been all the crazy one-off’s we’ve been able to make, it also means that we’ve had very few opportunities to tweak and improve recipes. To that end, we’ll be utilizing a public poll in the next couple months to determine the 2018 fan-favorites, which will help inform our choices about which beers return for 2019.

Will the initiative continue over for another 100 new beers in 2019?

I don’t believe so. While we certainly won’t be resting on our laurels next year, we also want to be cognizant of not fatiguing folks with a never-ending, revolving door of one-off’s. At a certain point we would like to make sure that some of our most enjoyed beers are available with greater frequency, because at the end of the day we want to not just stay true to a creative vision, but also ensure that the people who have been kind enough to *support* that vision feel heard and appreciated.
