Waypoint Public Craft Beer Block was a Blast!
We attended Waypoint Public‘s Craft Beer Block at SDCCU’s Festival of Arts in North Park on Saturday, May 20th. Without a doubt, it was a BLAST! Waypoint Public did a great job of having an outstanding lineup to cover both the day and evening sessions.
Although the event was on the smaller side, the atmosphere was still humming with excitement. With a full block of booths on both sides, there was plenty to explore and do. It was complete with tables, games, and shaded areas (thankfully). It gave us a chance to sit and enjoy some of our tasters instead of going straight from booth to booth.
The Day Session (Karen & Kelly)
Favorite Beers
Bitter Brothers | Family Tart. This was one of the first beers of the day we had at Craft Beer Block and we knew right away that it’ll be a great day. We fell in love with the juicy tart Bitter Brothers was pouring for event goers – so much so that we’re going to pick some up!
St. Archer | Peach Gose. This is also another beer that we’ve been dying to try going into the event. Much to our excitement, it was on tap at St. Archer’s booth. Undoubtedly, this will be a popular drink this summer!
Avery Brewing | Perzik Saison. These taps traveled all the way from Colorado and joined Stone’s tent at the event. Since we had the chance to visit their brewery after the Great American Beer Festival, it was only natural for us to be excited to try more of their beers. Needless to say, it became one of our favorites of the day.
Little Miss Brewing | Rosie Ginger Wit. During our interview with brewmaster Joe, he’d mentioned that there were a couple beers that were just about ready to be tapped and released. We were really excited to finally taste the Rosie Ginger Wit, which was one that they were currently working on at the time. It’s something we could sip on all day!
Belching Beaver | Mexican Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout. Yup. We went heavy with this one. We most definitely didn’t go wrong with it! The stout was filled with chocolate and peanut butter aromatics – and we mean, we all need a little sweetness in our lives and this just hit the spot!
Other Favorites
Boochcraft | Grapefruit + Hibiscus + Heather. For those who were looking for another way to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, this may be the option for you! Fruity, delicious and perfect for the summer, these alcoholic Kombucha drinks contain 7% ABV. We both found that this particular one sure made our tastebuds happy.
Sonic Tonic Drink Co | Lavender Cascara Tonic. Straying from the beer at the Craft Beer Block, we said hey to our friends at Sonic Tonic Drink Co. We had the chance to try the variations of their Cascara Tonics they brought with them, and enjoyed the lavender aromatics of the lavender tonic.
Bread + Cheese Catering | The Ruben. All of the beer drinking and chatting with the various breweries & vendors sure left us hungry! Thankfully, our friends at Bread + Cheese catering whipped up some delicious food for us to munch on as we sipped on more tasters.
The Night Session (Kristina & William)
We appreciated the smaller nature of this craft beer block. The lines didn’t get too long, and we were able to chat with representatives of the different breweries about their beers. Be warned. Make sure you watch your glasses. At the end of this festival we had our glasses stolen when we turned for a second to chat with folks behind us as the brewery representative was pouring our beers!
Favorite Beers
Golden State Brewery | Heritage Honey Ale. This beer was so refreshing, we just could not get enough of it! The honey shines through, but is not overly sweet. If you have the opportunity to go visit their satellite tasting room in Ocean Beach, we definitely recommend getting your hands on this one!
Modern Times Beer | Effective Dreams. This beer is a collaboration with Great Notion Brewing out of Portland, Oregon. This new IPA is packed with all the juicy hops we love, including Citra, Mosaic, Southern Passion, and new Experimental 9326 hops. We definitely had dreams about this beer that night.
Artifex Brewing | Unicorn Juice. Our first beer of the evening session, left a lasting impression. It is very well balanced and super refreshing! It tastes just as magical as the name suggests.
Sierra Nevada | Hoptimum. This 9.6% beer was shockingly smooth, making it somewhat dangerous! This is their hoppiest version of this beer yet, providing a blend of tropical and citrus hop aroma that delivers a refined, yet aggressive character.
Other Favorites
101 Cider House | Island Hopper. Guava, Passion Fruit, & Hops in a cider?! Yes please! This was such a refreshing take on a cider and shockingly has no sugar in it! A cider that tastes good and is a healthier option? Sold.
Overall, this event was really well organized, had just enough options that afforded you the opportunity to get through all of them in the four hour blocks of time, and it was an overall great time! We will definitely put this event on our calendar for next year, and so should you! Event proceeds benefited North Park Main Street, the non-profit organization committed to the development of the North Park Business Improvement District.
