The Waldos’ Special Ale by Lagunitas Brewing Co. is one of the company’s dankest ales and we can’t get enough of it. At 11.9%, this limited annual release is a commemoration; an homage if you will to adventure, friendship and good times. We are here to give you a glimpse into the lore behind the name and its connection to 420.
Interesting Tid Bit: To most people, 420 is known as a day to indulge in the devil’s lettuce. That being said, most of the general population doesn’t know that its roots also lies in the search of treasure.

History of The Waldos’
In 1971 at San Rafael High School, a young man by the name of Waldo Steve was gifted a treasure map by a fellow friend. This treasure map was created by his friend’s brother, an active Coast Guard at the time. What made this map special was the location it led to. Typically, a treasure map has an “X” indicating the location of the treasure. On this map, however, the “X” indicated the location of a cannabis patch a few men currently enlisted in the Coast Guard were growing. As the fear of being discovered and reprimanded by their superiors continued to grow; the men decided to give the patch up. This is what led up to the map landing on the laps of young boys searching for adventure, the Waldos.
The Start of 420
After football practice at 4:20 in the afternoon, the Waldos would meet at a statue of chemist Louis Pasteur. They would smoke, listen to music and embark on their hunt for the treasure. As their search continued, they would constantly pass each other in the school hallways and yell reminders of “420” to one another. Eventually, 420 became the Waldos’ code for getting high and other students soon caught onto the phrase. Weeks and weeks passed as the Waldos searched for the supposedly “ripe for the picking” patch of weed. Unfortunately, the Waldos never found the treasure. They still do continue to search and continue to feed their adventurous spirits with new expeditions full of weed, music and laughter.
