The First Great Southern Beer Festival was a HIT!
We had so much fun attending the first Great Southern Beer Festival! This event was held on Saturday, July 28th from 1pm-6pm at John Howell Park. When we arrived we were surrounded by friendly faces and excitement. We took a second to appreciate the sampling cup, a mason jar style glass and entered the festival. The John Howell Park accommodated the event well. There plenty of spots to hang out in the shade or in the sun, lawn games, and the live band was entertaining. The Southern heat can be very hard to beat, but luckily there were so many great breweries there to help keep you cool .
Favorite Beers
Aryelle’s Pick | I had ventured off from the group to get a sample of a beer that caught my eye, mainly because of the simple green design on the can. That is when I discovered 10 Barrel‘s Cucumber Crush and I don’t think there is any turning back. Sours are my favorite types of beer and this Cucumber Sour is so refreshing and easy to drink.
Kristina’s Pick | While all of the the beers Foothills Brewing brought to the event were good, I really enjoyed the Jade IPA! It was extremely resfreshing on a hot summer day in the South, and a beer that I could easily find myself drinking year around. To make it even better, we really enjoyed chatting with their brewery rep Clay, while we were sipping on their beers!
William’s Pick | The beer that caught my attention at the event was Catawba Brewing Co‘s White Zombie White Ale. This witbier was very refreshing for a hot summer day in Atlanta. The notes of corriander and orange were all I needed to sit back and enjoy the sites and sounds of the festival.
Favorite Vendors
Dave Washburn – Caricature Artist | It seemed every time we glanced over Dave Washburn was drawing someone new! These caricatures were hard to miss considering they were larger than life-sized. Although we didn’t get a chance to get drawn by him ourselves, everybody else seemed to enjoy their caricatures. You can check out some of his work HERE.
King of Pops | If you’re at an outside event in Georgia, chances are King of Pops will be there. Their popsicles are great to enjoy on a hot summer day. When you add their popsicles to a beer you get an ice cold sweet hoppy treat. For our pop-tail, we decided to keep it safe by choosing a popsicle and beer that have similar flavors. The final product was a Raspberry Lime pop dipped into Jekyll Brewing’s Tart Vise, a raspberry tart ale. The sweetness of the pop and the tartness of the brew made a great mix.
Smirnoff & Bulliet Bourbon | These two sponsors of the event served up cocktails. Smirnoff’s Blueberry Lemonade and Bulleit Bourbons’ Whisky Mule. We tried the Whisky Mule and it was a little strong, but still delicious. These sponsors also had a prize wheel to spin. Prizes including merchandise from both brands, our team won: Bulleit socks, Smirnoff sunglasses, and a Smirnoff chapstick.

Favorite Moments
One of our favorite moments was about halfway through the event we ran into our friends from Adventures in Atlanta. We spoke about the event and all the beers we sampled as well as gave suggestions to each other on what beers to try. We also discussed some other events coming up that both of our teams will be attending. This just goes to show you great beers will bring great people together time and time again.
Another thing about this event we thought was really cool is that this event had to be resceduled last minute, and we appreciated the fact they did something special for the OG Ticket Holders and gave them access to a special area with exclusive beers!
Lastly, we also really enjoyed drinking out of a nice Mason jar glass the entire time! Most festivals will give you a plastic cup that you take home and will probably never use, but this is a glass that we will enjoy sipping our beers in for years to come!
It was a great event, and we will be counting down the days until next year! Check out some more of our photos by visiting our Facebook Album HERE.
