Summerwood Beer and Music Festival 2018: A Success Story
The sun was setting, lighting downtown San Diego’s skyline in a very pleasant backdrop of purples, pinks, and blues. Susan (of Coterie Chic, who put this event together) packed the block for the Summerwood Beer and Music Festival 2018 with some of the best beer that San Diego had to offer – Amplified Ale Works, Pure Project, and Thorn Street, to name a few. This coupled with excellent food including Barrio Dogg, creators of some of the craziest hot dog combinations ever seen – and the company of people who were legitimately having a great time, made for a great event.
“We wanted this to feel like a community like this was a block of people coming together for a party,” Susan Flaster told us in the midst of Summerwood Beer and Music Festival 2018. “And we always try to find a charity to pair with as well.”
The best part of all was the beneficiary: the Love Thy Neighbor Movement, dedicated to helping the less fortunate with basic human needs. LTN is based largely out of San Diego but extends to Tijuana and Modesto for further outreach.
Without further ado, here were some highlights!
Favorite Beers:
Kevin – Border X‘s Horchata Golden Stout
I am a fan of things that aren’t as they appear; this rich, golden stout fits that bill perfectly. Despite its light color, Border X’s Horchata Golden Stout packs a punch at 9% ABV. This Golden Stout isn’t shy about fulfilling its destiny as a dark beer masquerading as a lighter ale, either. Maybe my eyes played tricks on my taste buds but the Border X offering felt smoother than a typical stout. I suspect a lot of that had to do with the vanilla that smoothed out the traditionally rougher edges of darker beers. Sprinkle in some cinnamon and this is a beer that you can easily crush some tacos with on a hot San Diego day.
Bill – Thorn Street Brewing‘s Barrio Lager

Pierce – Embarcadero‘s Chocolate Porter
Summerwood Beer Fest showed me a lot of seriously underrated breweries located south of Downtown. From Border X to some newcomers such as Attitude and Embarcadero, southern San Diego is putting out some pretty awesome beers. I’d have to say the beer that stuck out the most to me was Embarcadero’s, Chocolate Porter. This beer drew crowds as it differed from what most would call a “standard” porter. This beer was smooth, rich and chocolatey, just an extremely well-done beer. Embarcadero truly had me craving porters in the Summer, which I don’t think I have ever said before.
Favorite Moments:
Kevin
When we first arrived, there was a woman beginning to paint on the concrete wall just to the right of the entrance. As the doors had just opened there were only a few brush strokes to be seen. Fast-forward a couple hours (and beers) and imagine my surprise to see this incredible, life-like Great White Shark, seemingly about to bite the artists head off!
That moment was when everything about Summerwood clicked for me: the people, the food, the beer, the community – everything just made sense. With the music blasting and the people dancing in the packed room, I had an overwhelming feeling of people being free, loose, and creative, all within this space. That might just have been the Horchata Golden Stout talking, though.
