Summer Fitness Series: Hiking + Beer
When the sun’s out, doesn’t it just make you want to spend the day outdoors? It’s the perfect day to pack up some beers (and water), grab some friends, and find a new trail to explore. Next up in our Summer Fitness series is Hiking + Beer. Here’s a few trail suggestions to enjoy your beer with a view:
Mt. Laguna/Cleveland National Forest
When you head eastward on the 8 out of the city, you’ll hit the Mt. Laguna Recreational Area right before you hit the desert. Hidden in the recreational area are amazing trails to hike on and camping areas to spend the night, if that tickles your fancy. The beauty of camping in Mt. Laguna is that you can sit out by the campfire and enjoy a few more beers before you call it a night in preparation for an early morning hike. Mt. Laguna is complete with a visitor’s center that highlights all the trails that the recreational area has to offer.
Mt. Woodson
Yup, we’ve added the famous Potato Chip Rock hike to our list of places to hit. Why? Just picture it: cracking open a delicious beer while sitting with your legs hanging off the edge. That’s living life on the edge without a doubt. The trek up may be on the longer side, a whopping total 7.5 mile hike, but the views of Poway Lake make it worth it. Oh, and the beer too, of course!
Double Peak Trail
Located in North County San Diego, Double Peak Trail overlooks the city of San Marcos. It’s a 4.1 mile looped trail that offers amazing views all the way to the top and is rated moderate in difficulty. Once you’ve reached the peak, it’s the perfect time to stop, crack open a brew, and take in the sights of the city that looks so far away. Although the view from the top would be amazing at night, we wouldn’t recommend attempting it. It’s definitely safer during the day.
Iron Mountain
Located on the outskirts of Poway, this 5.6 mile hike is one that’s both challenging and easy. Before you get intimidated by the “challenging” part, let me tell you this: the view from the top is amazing. You can look out into towards Poway and see it all. You can also see the endless rolling hills that disappear off into the distance on the eastern side of the mountain. The trip may be lengthy, but the beer that you’ll enjoy at the top is worth the trek.
Three Sisters Falls
Also located in the Cleveland National Forest, the Three Sisters Falls trail is one that may be better suited for more advanced hikers. The trailhead is the same as Eagle Peak. However, this 3.5 mile trail will lead you to a breath taking waterfall. The trail end is the perfect place to just sit and hang out with good company while enjoying a few beers in celebration of completing the strenuous hike. Since it’s located out in the desert, it’s better to get out there during the summer evenings; before it gets dark, of course.
Needless to say, it’s time to get your fill with a new adventure. Grab some cans, your hiking shoes, and friends for a day of fun in the San Diego sun! Just don’t forget to take what you bring with you on the trails. In other words, keep the trails beautiful by not leaving your trash behind!
