Whether you know it or not, Stone Brewing Co. has been exercising the best sustainability practices in the beer industry since their inception in 1996. Community, sustainability and great beer are at the core of Stone’s principles and practices. Not one to boast, Stone rarely feels the need to report all of their good deeds. Supporting local farms, utilizing organic ingredients in their food and beer and creating a sense of community with their surrounding city is just another day at Stone Brewing. Whether or not they receive applause for their efforts is not their main concern, which is why Stone’s Full Circle Pale Ales’ viral attention came as a surprise.
Full Circle Pale Ale’s Origins
Many news outlets reported Stone Brewing’s endeavor of using purified reclaimed water as “Toilet to Tap” and “Sewer Beer”. With rumors and “alternative facts” circulating the web, Stone felt the need to clear the air on Full Circle Pale Ale’s origins. Full Circle was brewed specifically and exclusively for a one day
event promoting Pure Water San Diego. San Diego hopes to make a third of its waste water drinkable by 2035, Stone Brewing was simply demonstrating a good use of it. Essentially, Stone took “Save Water, Drink Beer” to another level. The water used in Full Circle had initially come from San Diego toilets, showers and taps. After an advanced filtration system which recycled and purified the wastewater, it was supplied to Stone Brewing. The purified water was actually cleaner than they were used to. Minerals had to added back into the water to create the finished product.
As for the beer itself, nothing but positive reviews have been made about its fruity notes and clean finish. Unfortunately Full Circle Pale Ale is not in distribution. As mentioned earlier, it was an exclusive, one-time release.
We are happy that Stone received much deserved accolades for their sustainability practices but we are happier to hear the true story from Stone Brewing themselves.
