Societe Brewing WINS 2018 World Beer Cup Gold!

On May 3rd, they announced the winners of the “Olympics of Beer” -aka 2018 World Beer Cup. This took place at the Craft Brewers Conference in Nashville, TN. We’re excited to share the news that San Diego’s own Societe Brewing Company was awarded a highly-coveted gold medal for its wine-barrel-aged Feral ale, The Thief. Held bi-annually, the World Beer Cup is arguably the largest, most significant professional brewing competition in the world. This year’s competition included a record 8,234 entries from 2,515 breweries hailing from 66 countries, including submissions from every U.S. state.

Societe Brewing was one of only two San Diego breweries to win a gold medal.

Well-suited to fly the San Diego banner for many reasons, The Thief is proud to bring home the honor. Not only was it brewed in San Diego proper, it also gets much of its vinous flavor and complexity from Grenache Blanc grapes from Escondido’s Vesper Vineyards. Each year, members of Societe’s brewing team venture north to help hand-process grapes harvested by their vintner friends. They transport the fruit back to Societe’s brewery, where they incorporate it into fermenting beer. Then, they funnel it into used California red-wine barrels. Lastly, they inoculate it with wild yeast and microorganisms and left to mature.

The Thief took top honors in the Mixed Culture Brett Beer category.

It may be one of the most difficult styles of beer to produce. Not only does it require brewers to craft flawless beer, it also takes mastery of the barrel-aging process. This entails advanced scientific knowledge of yeast and bacteria, a sound technique for properly aging beer in a controlled environment over months or years. Additionally, one needs expertise in the blending of beer from different barrels with fresh beer as well as special care when packaging into bottles for conditioning. So, they can eventually be for sale to the public.

“We are proud of all of our beers, but the additional challenges presented by this style of beer make our win for The Thief all the more special to us,” says Societe co-founder and brewmaster Travis Smith. “I have immersed myself in the art of barrel-aging over my entire career, first as an apprentice at Russian River Brewing Company, later on a larger scale at The Bruery, and now as a practitioner at my own brewery. There is always more to learn and, frankly, it can be humbling at times. But on days like this, it can be so incredibly gratifying to stick with something, not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard and worth every bit of effort our team puts forward.”

The Thief is a golden-hued, exquisitely balanced 6.3% alcohol-by-volume “Feral” (barrel-aged, wild, sour) ale featuring myriad bright, earthy, spicy, white-wine flavors.

It is Societe’s most award-winning beer, having previously taken a bronze medal at the 2016 San Diego International Beer Festival in the Belgian-style Sour Ale category, earned a 96-point score from Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine, a “highly recommended” classification from Celebrator Beer News, and status as one of the best beers at the 2017 Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Festival from Paste Magazine.
