Six San Diego Sours that You HAVE to Try this Summer!
Sours have become increasingly popular, especially as this summer heat rolls in. They’re also a perfect summer pool-side sipper. Since most of them have fruity notes to sweeten the tartness of a traditional sour, it makes it even more delicious. That being said, here’s a few that are some of our summer favorites.
Glitz and Glam | Eppig Brewing
Why it made the list: Glitz and Glam is a Berliner Weisse that is brewed with raspberry and cherry. It was one of the first beers that we’d tried while we were Eppig and it’s been one of our favorites since. It’s not overly tart and it’s perfectly balanced with the fruitiness of the raspberry and cherry. This is one sour series that you don’t want to miss.
Family Tart | Bitter Brothers
Why it made the list: This Bay Ho local recently released their Family Tart, which is a delicious Berliner Weisse. They took on this German beer style and added a twist of their own. They add different fruit variations depending on what’s in season throughout the year. It’s absolutely delicious! Needless to say, Bitter Brothers aren’t bitter about this delicious brew they created, and neither are we!
S3 Pineapple Sour | Kilowatt Brewing
Why it made the list: Between their two locations, Kilowatt offers a range of sours in their S3 (Super Sour Series) sour lineup. Their S3 Pineapple Sour is the perfect balance between tart and bursting with juicy tropical flavors. The Pineapple Sour and many more are available at their Ocean Beach location. There are others in the S3 series that are available at the Kearny Mesa tasting room as well. Needless to say, all of them are delicious and easy to sip on while enjoying some good company. They will be releasing a Flower Sour Series in Ocean Beach on Thursday, August 3rd in Ocean Beach for their Summer of Love 50th Anniversary Celebration.
Sour Wench | Ballast Point Brewing
Why it made the list: This delicious sour brewed by a local favorite comes in not one but five different variations. Each variation is fruity and flavorful. It’s easy to sip, especially on Ballast Point’s outdoor patio at their Miramar location. Sour Wench originated from a Home Brew Mart recipe, which they’ve then tailored and added various fruits to. They’ve also recently added this tart blackberry ale, which is the original variation, to their bottled beer selection.

Mango Tart | Rip Current Brewing
Why it made the list: Rip Current’s Mango Tart is a testiment to their 2015 Great American Beer Festival award of Very Small Brewery and Brewer of the Year. We’d initially fell in love their Boysenberry Sour, which was previously on tap. That said, the Mango tart uses the same recipe just with a different puree. This version has a rich and full mango flavor profile, which results from the extensive use of mangoes during the fermentation process. A crisp, lactic sourness backs the fruit character that brightens the mango flavors and adds a complex taste experience for your palate.
Landfall | 32 North Brewing
Why it made the list: 32 North’s Landfall Berliner Weisse is a rustic interpretation of Berlin’s famous sour wheat beer. They used the traditional brewing method, which is to use a temperamental culture of wild yeast and lactobacillus. This, in turn, produces a refreshing acidic ale with a crisp bite. 32 North also adds a few ounces of syrup to the brew, which is actually the traditional way to serve this beer. The syrup also sweetens the Berliner Weisse up a bit.
