San Diego’s New Gastropub: The Corner Drafthouse
A new gastropub recently opened in San Diego’s Bankers Hill neighborhood and it’s been the talk of foodies and craft brew nerds alike, who’ve anxiously awaited their arrival. David Creviston and Dan Sobek, partners of The Corner Drafthouse are a winning duo with their knowledge and expertise in craft beer and fine food. We got the pleasure of meeting Sobek (or “Chef Dan”), the executive chef, who previously worked at the Waldorf Astoria in New York before coming to San Diego to start his own gig… and man are we lucky to have him!
We got the pleasure of dining at The Corner Drafthouse on Monday night, about a week or so after their opening, and it felt like they’d been around forever. They fit so effortlessly into the San Diego food-beer scene, with over 70 beers on tap (most of them craft beer, and many local), and their own twist on fresh, fun California cuisine. The decor is rustic with dimmed lighting, at least in the evening, which makes for a comforting ambience. It’s a classy place, yet unpretentious. So whether you’re looking to bring a date, or just meet up with a group of friends, this place is a great choice.
We tried a selection of their appetizers and beer that was recommended to us to pair alongside each dish. Talking to Chef Dan it was clear how passionate he was about the quality and freshness of the food, their seafood in particular. “Maybe I should have opened a seafood restaurant,” he joked. It’s clear by the quality of their seafood items we tried – Ceviche, Ahi Tuna Poke, Crab Cakes – that he certainly could. Being a bit of a snob when it comes to seafood, growing up on the East Coast, I have to say I’ve never had better crab cakes (which, he insisted were 95% fresh, local crab meat). There you have it, quality ingredients paired with quality craft beer. It’s simple, yet somehow a rarity here in San Diego.
There are many establishments in San Diego in which the beer is outstanding, and the food is subpar. Finally someone is raising the food bar, which we think elevates the entire experience of drinking a really great brew. And with their long and thoughtfully selected list of beers, you won’t have a hard time finding one you like, and perhaps stumbling upon a few new ones.
The Corner Drafthouse’s motto is EAT.DRINK.BE SOCIAL. Chef Dan’s inspiration for his restaurant was that he wanted to create a place that he would enjoy going to, chowing down on delicious food and beers, and meeting people. The menu has certainly got a certain fun factor, with their beer infused nacho cheese sauce and their no-bake cheesecake with frosted flake praline (if you’re lucky, you’ll get the story behind this one). Plus their long bar tables and outdoor patio seating encourages people to get talking. Admittedly, the beer helps too.
