What exactly is a Radler and why should I try it?
Well since you asked, a Radler is an alcoholic beverage that originated from Bavaria, Germany. This drink contains beer mixed with sparkling lemonade or ginger beer, very similar to a German Shandy. To break it down, 50% Beer + 50% Lemonade = 100% Radler. Now, for you 100% beer people, don’t knock it till you try it. For those of you who have traveled to Germany, you know just how popular this drink is at bars and beer gardens. Fun fact: The term Radler translates to “cyclist” earning its name from Franz Kugler, who initiated a bicycle trail in Deisenhofen in 1922. The moment when 13,000 cyclists showed up to Kugler’s after party, he was quickly running out of beer so he began mixing half beer with half lemon soda creating an instant sports drink refreshment.
The Radler’s popularity is due in part to its lower alcohol content (2-3.5%) and refreshing summer drink flavor. This sounds very San Diego, right? However, since Radler’s have not quite gained the same popularity in America, we decided to take matters into our own hands, and create an easy DIY craft beer Radler for Hoplight Social readers.
You will soon find out that this is the perfect daytime refreshment (aka the perfect day drink) that pairs well with fresh food appetizers such as hummus and veggies or a summer salad.

- 2 Beer Mugs or Steins
- 1 can San Pellegrino Limonata Flavor
- 12 oz. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
- 1 Lemon for garnishing Optional
Ingredients

- Fill both steins half way using the full can of San Pellegrino Limonata.
- Top off both steins with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale about 6 oz. per stein.
- Garnish with lemon (optional). Then Enjoy!
