Recapping The La Mesa Oktoberfest
What’s Oktoberfest?
In order to prepare for La Mesa’s Oktoberfest we had to ask ourselves, do we truly know what Oktoberfest is? Aside from drinking out of steins, eating delicious brats and adorning chicken hats, we didn’t have a great understanding of the history of Oktoberfest. So first, a brief history lesson.
On October 12th, 1810 Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to the wedding celebration. Within a short amount of years, what once was a wedding celebration with horse racing turned into a festival. These festivals with carnival attractions and activities such as tree climbing, agricultural shows, dancing and later on beer halls then evolved into present-day Oktoberfests.
La Mesa Oktoberfest
With our newly found Oktoberfest knowledge, we made our way to La Mesa. Attending La Mesa’s Oktoberfest as a first timer was a thrill. An entire community gathered together to eat, drink, play and celebrate all that encapsulates Oktoberfest. This event was truly fun for the whole family.
Outside the Biergarten, games and rides were set up for children of all ages. The Ferris wheel and fish bowl toss were big hits. Vendors were set up along La Mesa Blvd. and sold everything from jewelry to homemade dips. Children and parents alike walked the street with giant pretzels, kettle corn, and brats in hand.
The Hofbrauhaus Biergarten
The scent of juicy brats filled the air upon entering The Hofbrauhaus Biergarten. Adorned with chicken hats and flower crowns, everyone in attendance were full of cheer. People shouted “Prost!” as beer steins crashed against one another. Centered in the middle of the Biergarten was the beer hall. This is where people gathered to eat and drink together as one as there was no need for separate tables or reserved seating. The yodeling contest was by far the most entertaining competition at Oktoberfest. Volunteers from the crowd attempted their best yodeling voice and kept everyone laughing.

The Craft Beer & Spirit Garden was less traditional than the Hofbrauhaus Biergarten but had plenty of entertainment nonetheless. Whereas the Biergarten had a live traditional band belting out polka music, the Spirit Garden had a DJ playing top hits. This is the area adults could buy mixed drinks and cocktails. Giant board games such as Jenga and Beer Pong kept guests entertained all night.
All in all, La Mesa Oktoberfest was a hit. We can’t wait to attend next year. Prost!
