PCH – The Beer Lover’s Ultimate Road Trip
Spring is a time of change. The flowers start blooming, the weather gets warmer, and beer is suddenly much more appealing at 10 in the morning. Luckily for you, we have the perfect vacation planned for you! In this two part series, we’re going to recommend some of the best breweries up and down the California Coast in a road trip that spans all of the world famous Pacific Coast Highway. Get ready for the most epic road trip of your life.
SAN DIEGO
While we understand that the Pacific Coast Highway TECHNICALLY doesn’t start until Orange County (if you are heading North), we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention San Diego. After all, it is America’s Finest City!
Kilowatt Brewing Company
Address: 1875 Cable Street, San Diego, CA 92107
Beers Worth Trying: Passionfruit Green Tea Ale & 150 Session IPA
Why We Loved It: The lights! They avoid the cliche of hipster breweries and go for something different, something straight out of Alice in Wonderland. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like what falling down the rabbit hole felt like, Kilowatt‘s Ocean Beach tasting room is for you.
Modern Times Beer
Address: 3725 Greenwood St, San Diego, CA 92110
Beers Worth Trying: Infinity Beach & any of their IPA’s
Why We Loved It: Modern Times‘ Point Loma tasting room is 2,000 square feet of weird, and not in a bad way. It’s something out of a failed utopian society…which is exactly where Modern Times get’s their name. They also have a gigantic mural(?) made entirely of post-its on the wall; while the post-its might draw your eye, you’re definitely going to stay for their drafts.
La Jolla Brewing Company
Address: 7536 Fay Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037
Beers Worth Trying: Raspberry Hibiscus Hefeweizen & Bird Rock Brown Ale
Why We Loved It: The La Jolla Brewing Company may be slightly off the beaten path, but their beer is makes it worth the trip. The LJBC prides itself on being a “local joint”, giving nothing but that neighborhood feel. It is definitely one of La Jolla’s hidden gems, crafting beer that’s almost as recognizable as the beaches and landmarks around it.
Mason Ale Works
Address: 2002 S. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA 92054
Beers Worth Trying: Cash Imperial Coffee Stout & Charley Hustle Red IPA
Why We Loved It: Located in Oceanside, Mason Ale Works has quickly become a staple of the local beer scene. Their wide selection of beers (for such a small brewery) is extremely impressive. That, combined with their specialty “Snale Works” makes them head and shoulders above the rest; it’s a barrel aged program that releases special beers in small batches. Sometimes, slow and steady wins the race.
ORANGE COUNTY
When people think of Orange County, the first thought that comes into most people’s mind are housewives, not hops. Luckily for us, the OC has a burgeoning and thriving microbrewery scene. So buckle up and get ready for your tastebuds to be titillated, because this is where the fun begins.
Left Coast Brewing Company
Address: 1251 Puerta Del Sol, San Clemente, CA 92673
Beers Worth Trying: Nuclear Chi Chi’s Session IPA & Hop Juice Triple IPA
Why We Loved It: As we drive up the California Coast, it would be a shame not to stop at San Clemente’s Left Coast Brewing Company. A staple in the OC beer scene since 2004, this brewery’s won a slew of awards…the most important one being the one to our heart. If you are a fan of events like us, be sure to check out their schedule for trivia nights and even beer-and-yoga events.
Riip Beer Company
Address: 17214 Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington Beach, CA 92649
Beers Worth Trying: 90’s Hop Culture & Billy the Redbeard
It is a soft jelly form which is easily soluble and it comes in various flavors like orange, vanilla, orange, strawberry. try now cialis in spain It is reported that young adults often suffer from ED order generic cialis due to emotional and mental support you require, you can focus on performing rather than suffering from erection dysfunction and are disappointed of their low sex life. Generic meds are cheapest viagra tabs available under the name of it. But did it give a better understanding about what Gout is? No. generic cialis no prescription
Why We Loved It: A personal favorite of ours, Riip Beer Company embodies everything that you think a Huntington Beach brewery would be; laid-back and delicious. They have a taproom right across the street from the water and…THEY DELIVER! Albeit you have to live in the greater HB area to receive deliveries, but what a neat idea; they’re like modern day milkmen, driving around in their rustic 1930’s Helms Coach. Another fun fact is that their tasting room also sells home brewing kits so you can BYOB (brew your own beer). If you are impatient and don’t have 3 months to wait, you can always grab a growler to go and be on your merry way.
LOS ANGELES
The next stop in the Beer Lover’s Ultimate Road Trip along the PCH is the city of Angels…and smog, and traffic. Honestly, if there was a city in California that needed a drink after work, it would be LA. They take themselves way too seriously. Despite being born out of glitz and glamour, there are still some that don’t need $20 cocktails to enjoy themselves. All they need is just a nice, cold glass of beer. In the city of stars, some of the most recognizable breweries on the West Coast were born.
Absolution Brewing Company
Address: 2878 Columbia Street, Torrance, CA 90503
Beers Worth Trying: Holy Cow Milk Stout & The Convert – CA Common
Why We Loved It: While Absolution Brewing Company can hardly be considered a microbrewery, they still make absolutely delicious beers. The best part? Located in LA, it’s a pitstop on your journey. Don’t let the name scare you away. The only thing religious about this place is the way they make their beers. If you’re a fan of barrel-aged beers, their American Revelation is one you can’t miss out on. It’s sin-sational! In addition to the taps, they have food trucks and non alcoholic options for your designated driver.
Smog City Brewing Company
Address: 1901 Del Amo Blvd., Ste B, Torrance, CA 90501
Beers Worth Trying: Smog City The Nothing & Coffee Porter
Why We Loved It: If you’re looking for a breath of fresh air, Smog City Brewing Company is it. With Great American Beer Festival award winning head brewer Jonathan Porter, this family owned brewery has big flavor. Despite being small, they still offer growler fills and brewery tours in addtion to a more intimate feel. The best part is that they’ll let you try some of their experimental brews! Ummm, who can say no to that?
King Harbor Brewing
Address: 132 International Boardwalk Redondo Beach, California 90277
Beers Worth Trying: Coconut IPA & Able Brown
Why We Loved It: What could be better than a literal board and brew? King Harbor‘s tap room is so close to the water, you can practically dip your toes in the sand. To make things even better, they’re eager to collaborate with other brewers, chefs, and even musicians to really bring out the character of each of their beers; plus, it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Redondo Beach Pier, it’s the perfect place to post up and watch the sunset.
VENTURA
As you move on from LA…and the traffic…and the smog, you’ll hit Ventura. The little surf town nestled away north of LA is one that you really don’t hear about it unless you’re a grom or you grew up in the area. Like all great surf cities, it’s all about the beach casual. You will never find a place where surfer culture permeates more than in Ventura (yes, that includes you San Diego), but surf isn’t all that Ventura is known for…
Topa Topa Brewing
Address: 104 E Thompson Blvd., Ventura, CA 93001
Beers Worth Trying: Gadabout Oatmeal Stout & Flatlands Saison
Why We Loved It: If you’re really looking to get the full Ventura experience, head over to Topa Topa Brewing Company. The tasting room is tastefully decorated; it’s a mix of this faux minimalistic yet beachy decor. Yet the best way to experience it is to just immerse yourself in it. Topa Topa is devoted to the microbrew experience; they say they’re all about “thinking big and staying small”. If that doesn’t scream good beer, then we don’t know what else does.
Poseidon Brewing
Address: 5777 Olivas Park Drive, Unit Q, Ventura, CA 93003
Beers Worth Trying: Bobblehead Blood Orange Pale Ale & Battleship Blonde Ale
Why We Loved It: Poseidon Brewing, on the other hand, is less surfer and more sea; it’s an entirely different way to experience the ocean. Their nautical themed tasting room, aptly named Davy Jones’s Locker, can hold up to 75 people. And because of their small size, they’re a brewery that’s in touch with their community. They even have a “pints with a purpose” motto, where a percentage of all beer sales goes to a charity. Beer is about bringing people together, and these guys get that.
There is plenty more to come so check out Part 2!
