PAIRED at Great American Beer Festival 2016
To celebrate its 35th year, the Great American Beer Festival promised to be bigger and better than ever before. For American Homebrewers Association or Brewers Association members this included the addition of the Paired Pavilion which featured 21 chefs matched with 21 craft brewers, offering 42 total unique pairings. For an additional fee, members were able to join the who’s who of celebrated chefs and small independent brewers from around the country in an intimate setting located just off the main hall.
If you are a fan of beer and food pairings then this is your event. It is one not to be missed and honestly is the best we have ever attended. Each pairing was unique, flavorful, and well crafted. The craft beer selections available at this event were not available in the main hall making it all the more exclusive. The setup was extremely organized and allowed members to go from table to table indulging in what each one had to offer. We tried over 30 of the pairings available and rather than go over each one, we wanted to share our standout pairings of the evening:
TABLE 2 | Ecliptic Brewing: Portland, OR & Joe Rodger: shift flg. Flagstaff, AZ
PAIRING: Carina Peach Sour Ale + Duck Liver Mousse, Pickled Peach Macaroon
WHY WE LOVED IT: Not your typical macaroon flavor and the sour ale really brought out the complex flavors of the dish.
PAIRING: Quasar Pale Ale + Sweetwater Farms Vegetable “Rillette,” Lemon Ricotta, Spent Grain Cracker
WHY WE LOVED IT: It’s no wonder Ecliptic Brewing is spaced themed because their pale ale was out of this world and paired with the lemon ricotta made us feel like we were not on this planet anymore.
TABLE 16 | Tenaya Creek Brewery: Las Vegas, NV & Jordan Wallace & Chris Donato: Pizzeria Locale, Boulder, CO
PAIRING: Old Jackalope Barleywine + Budino : Butterscotch Pudding, Milk Chocolate Ganache, Caramel & Whipped Cream
WHY WE LOVED IT: This butterscotch pudding was the most amazing version we have had to date and paired with the complex flavors of the barleywine made us feel like we were on cloud 9.
TABLE 17 | Swamp Head Brewery: Gainesville, FL & Paul Reilly: Beast & Bottle and Coperta, Denver, CO
PAIRING: Morning Glow + Mushroom Agnolotti, Cambozola Cream, Hazelnut
WHY WE LOVED IT: Vanilla Coffee Blonde. Do we need to say more? This beer was ridiculously good and really helped elevate the dish that was paired with it.
TABLE 22 | Alaskan Brewing Co. : Juneau, AK & Kyle Mendenhall: Arcana, Boulder, CO
PAIRING: Alaskan Cran-Spruce + Carrot Cake with Spruce Cream, Orange & Maple Caramel
WHY WE LOVED IT: Hands down these two were meant for each other. The beer and the carrot cake were in perfect harmony with each other and left us wanting more. The tartness of the beer helped cut down the sweetness from the cake making this one of our favorite pairings we’ve ever had.
If you are a member of American Homebrewers Association, Brewers Association or thinking about joining and if this event returns to GABF next year, be sure to trust us when we say you DO NOT WANT TO MISS IT! The Great American Beer Festival will return to Denver October 5-7, 2017 so mark your calendars! We are already counting down the days!
