Our Favorite Brewery Down Under!
Australia is a remarkable place and quite unlike any other place we’ve explored. There are more things that can kill you there than almost anywhere else on the planet due to most of it being an uninhabitable desert. Then there are the things that make it worth the trip: you can hug koalas, marvel at the their quirky cafes with undeniably good coffee, and eat kangaroo for dinner. In Queensland, where we happened to be traveling recently, the people are healthy and fit, incredibly social, and total adventure-seekers. Aussies also have arguably one of the coolest English accents around, at least Americans tend to think so. Being such a dream destination, we found ourselves wondering why is it so HARD to find decent craft beer there? Well, here’s another interesting factoid: Beer consumption in Australia has reach a 65-year low, yet craft beer sales are growing exponentially and gaining swift popularity. We couldn’t be happier to hear that!
We did find every opportunity to taste local “craft beer” while on our road trip adventures from Cairns, in northern Queensland, to Brisbane, the southern tip of Queensland (covering about half of the East Coast, the most populated side of this great continent). We tried a number of different beers that came highly recommended, Stone & Wood and 4 Pines to name a couple. Most were below 5% ABV, very light, subtly hopped, and seriously lacking in flavor. Until we got to Brisbane.
Brisbane is the 3rd largest city in Australia, and here is where we hit the jackpot! Like camels in a desert, we arrived at Green Beacon Brewery desparate for a good beer. We ordered their Windjammer IPA and Penny Porter, sat at a table and before we knew it we were on our second round. We visited a few other bars with craft beer that night, like Saccharomyces Beer Cafe, but none of the other places brewed their own or quite matched the freshness of this beer. So what made it our #1 favorite in Queensland?
1. The Flavor – They didn’t play it safe. The IPA was loaded with a variety of hops and perfectly balances, with tropical notes and hints of citrus. Meanwhile, the Porter was unexpectedly rich, with tons of toasty chocolate malt, some silt smooth caramel, and a nice bite of coffee at the finish. The ones we tried also rang in at, or above 6% ABV 😉
2. The Ambience – We finally found a tasting room that was jam packed, moderately boisterous, and had an authentic feel to it. Somewhere you’d want to come with a large group and stay for hours.
We were also approached by a gang of Aussie pirates, and sworn in to their group. Apparently they pick a different theme every weekend, get dressed up, and go out in search of great beer. They usually end up at Green Beacon as some point in their night. Crikey, we love these people!
If only we had continued down the coast another 10+ hours and reached Sydney, we are sure we would have found even more amazing beers and great times. With that said, our experience at Green Beacon would be seriously hard to beat.
