Women in Beer: Meet Kristine Baker of Women’s Craft Beer Collective
We had the pleasure of running into the brains and creator of Women’s Craft Beer Collective, Kristine Baker, at the Pink Boots Society’s 10th Anniversary Festival. Surrounded by many inspiring women in the craft beer industry, Kristine Baker stands out because similar to Hoplight Social, she helps shine a light on interesting aspects of the craft beer industry. In a prodominately male dominated industry, Kristine encourages women to get together to explore and learn more about the wonderful world of craft beer. Usually behind the scenes, we decided to spotlight an amazing woman who is uplifting, creative, and knows her beer! Enjoy getting to know a little more about her, what is in store for her company, and her advice for other women aspiring to work in beer below.
Tell us a little about yourself and how you help support the craft beer industry
The mission statement of the Women’s Craft Beer Collective is: Educating women in the enjoyment and fine art of craft beer. We participate and strongly support the local breweries of San Diego and North San Diego. We don’t always tour, listen to brewers speak, study tasting notes and styles or brew. Sometimes we simply gather and craft. We really just enjoy using our hands and being artistic, of course with beer close by!
How did you get started and what interested you about the brewing industry initially?
It all started in January of 2013. Women’s Craft Beer Collective was an idea that bloomed from my weekly pilgrimage to breweries where I would take along a few willing girlfriends. Our pilgrimages evolved organically as a monthly meetup. From the inception, the idea was always to learn about beer! I have also been fortunate to have worked for two amazing breweries. You can currently find me “womening” the taps at Culture Brewing Co. in Solana Beach.
Anything exciting coming up with Women’s Craft Beer Collective that you can share with us?
Oh goodness YES! This is my favorite time of year because now is when the hops grow! Hop picking season is right around the corner and that means wet-hopped beers on tap! We will be at San Diego Golden Hop Farm for a few organized picking party events. August 6th will be one of our Hop picking parties. You can RSVP on my website under EVENTS.
On you days away from work, what type of activities do you indulge in?
There is a collection of handmade beer related merchandise available offered on the website. I actually make everything on the site, so I’d say that I’m usually creating in my workroom on those days.
What style of beer do you enjoying drinking the most?
Spontaneous wild fermented bottle aged and conditioned sours. I’m absolutely fascinated with the miracle of it. The funkier the better!
What advice would you give women who want to break into the craft beer industry?
Drink beer! No, but really, that’s how you learn and train your palate. Studying and passing the first level “beer servers” Cicerone on your own would speak volumes on a resume!
