Hurricane Irma Sparks Relief Effort with Ska’s 22nd Anniversary Party
Ska Brewing and ska music fans from all over the country have been anxiously waiting for the Durango local’s sold out 22nd Anniversary Party. Year after year, Ska beer and music lovers swarm to southwest Colorado to celebrate this craft-brewing pioneer’s anniversary. Unfortunately, this year Hurricane Irma had plans to wreak havoc in Florida the same weekend. The aftermaths had a ripple effect that traveled across the country.
The brewing company had originally enlisted Less Than Jake, a Gainsville, FL based ska band to headline the anniversary party. The two have been planning the big weekend for nearly a year. Suddenly, Irma got in the path of safely getting the band to Colorado. Not to mention, the band’s families would be left in harm’s way. So, needless to say, Ska had to switch gears when the call came in that Less Than Jake wouldn’t be able to make it to the event. They were able to act quickly despite not having their headliner present and knowing they were in the line of fire in Florida.
Although the party went on without the band, it went on with an added cause. Their efforts resulted in a weekend that raised over $28,000 for various charities.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Less Than Jake families and all who have been affected by these recent natural disasters. Their concerns are far greater than many of us may ever know,” said Ska CEO and Co-Founder Dave Thibodeau. “While we were bummed Less Than Jake wouldn’t be here, we knew there was only one way for the Ska tribe to handle the situation: throw one Hell of a party and send the proceeds to hurricane relief. And that’s exactly what we did.”
Ska Brewing enlisted the help of Denver-based band, Dendrites. They packed up and rushed out to Durango for the weekend. Partygoers were still able to enjoy live music at the 22nd Anniversary celebrations. Fans rallied to support those in need across the country at the event. The party gathered over 1,500 people and raised $28,000. The brewing company divided up $18,000 between three local Floria charities; Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, Humane Society of US Disaster Relief Fund, and Volunteer Florida – Florida Disaster Fund. Additionally, the remaining $10,00 went to the La Plata County Open Space Conservatory, who is Ska’s long time beneficiary and partner.
“We are so very grateful for what Ska brings to our quality of life in Durango, and their dedication to protecting the land and water our community loves,” said La Plata Open Space Conservancy Executive Director, Amy Schwarzbach.
In addition to raising money for Florida & La Plata County, the Durango brewery also participated in #ReliefBeer efforts on 9/8. #ReliefBeer was organized by St. Arnold. They donated $1 from every pint sold to the Houston Food Bank. Their contribution from #ReliefBeer total over $540. Talk about a weekend full of drinking for a cause at Ska Brewing!
