Getting Weird At New Belgium’s Tour De Fat 2018!

Tour de Fat is a yearly, national event put on by New Belgium Brewing that is a wild afternoon of comedy, costumes, music, food, and most importantly, beer. For the past 19 years, they have traveled through cities to promote shifting gears and getting weird. Named The Greatest Little Show on Earth, they have raised over $5 million for local charities including Denver’s own Bike Denver and The Denver Cruiser Ride. Bike Denver even had a bike parade that led to the festival! We attended this year and it certainly got weird.

Honestly, Tour de Fat gets weirder every year and it’s awesome. It’s like if Lady Gaga organized the Tour de France. This year in Denver things were weird in the most wonderful ways. People dressed in their most outrageous get-ups (bear costumes, bad wigs, giant cardboard Viking heads, Mad Max-esque leather jackets, spiked bras, and so, so much spandex), jumped on their bikes decorated with unicorn heads, ribbons, and neon lights and cruised to Sculpture Park in downtown Denver. The music was on point as well, setting the mood with synthesizers, electric pianos, and some impressive guitar riffs and drum solos to keep the people moving. The live music was amazing as well, giving the people yet another reason to stick around and enjoy a New Belgium brew on a perfect summer day in Denver.

The Beer

Fat Tire Red Ale

The worldwide favorite, as well as the inspiration behind Tour de Fat, was on hand and the New Belgium staple was a crowd favorite. Perfect for enjoying while lounging on the lawn, or participating in the dance competition for a bike!

Citradelic Tangerine IPA

Packed with a deliciously hoppy flavor featuring tangerine notes, Citradelic never disappoints. Especially when it’s a warm summer afternoon and you are watching the Camp Talent Show.

Voodoo Ranger IPA

This IPA is one for the hop fans and boasts tropical aromas mixed in with a nice, juicy fruit flavor. Perfect for some Portaoke, Tour de Fat’s own porta-potty karaoke booth.

Dayblazer Golden Ale

Dayblazer was an awesome addition to the beer selection this year. The refreshingly smooth Golden Ale had a crisp, citrusy finish and a sweet end note, making it a great choice for lounging on the lawn in the sun.

The Food

This year had a hand full of local food trucks to choose from, and they were all a necessity after dancing and partaking in the festivities. A shady table area was provided as well as a water station to re-hydrate in the VIP section. We enjoyed some delicious bites from Cravings, who lives up to its name. Between the sandwich, wings, and poke bowl, we got to sample a good portion of their menu. It helped us beat the heat and enjoy the rest of the event.

The Acts/Music

Fire Leopard, Sputnik, Slow Ride, KOLARS, and the headliner, Jamestown Revival, kept the dance party going the entire afternoon. As well as special comedy acts, Daredevil Chicken, the hosts of the event, Handsome Little Devil, Sedan Halen, and KOLARS, who kept the crowd laughing. There was even a Camp Talent Show where attendees were encouraged to get up on stage and show off their unique talents. A dance contest was also held to give away a New Belgium bike that had us laughing the entire time. Portaoke, a porta potty karaoke booth, offered patrons a chance to belt it out, and a bike cruise area allowed people to try out everything from one wheeled hoverboard-like apparatuses to classic bicycles. Fun, interactive art pieces were placed around the event, including a neat music-box complete with a disco ball on top. We looked through the iconic kaleidoscope, which was set up at the center of the venue. Needless to say, the whole experience was quite unforgettable.

Tour de Fat was, as always, a whirlwind of costumes, shenanigans, and fun. The hosts always put on a show, and the crowd was always ready for a bear attack. That’s right, a bear attack. Camp wouldn’t be camp without one, right? Luckily, we had an eagle to protect us and keep the bear from stealing our beer. Local booths set up on site allowed people to sign up to vote and multiple beer tents were ready to serve you a cold beer. We have to say, things sure get weird when people let loose and decide to have fun. The energy of the event was unlike anything we’ve experienced, and it gets weirder and weirder year by year.
