GABF Awards & Saturday Afternoon Session Recap
Awards
The Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony is one of the biggest parts of the entire event. Not only do breweries travel from all over the US to share their beer with the world, but they also enter their beers in the competition in hopes of obtaining a coveted medal. This awards ceremony proved to be a testament to the way the beer scene is growing throughout the United States. 293 GABF awards were given to 260 breweries. That means only 33 breweries received duplicate awards this year. California took home 57 medals, Texas took home 23 medals, Illinois took home 10 medals, & Ohio took home 9 medals. Out of the 57 medals awarded, San Diego took home 14 medals this time around. We have posted the awards for San Diego below.
Gold Medals
- Brown Porter: Tabula Rasa Toasted Porter, Second Chance Beer Co.
- Honey Beer: Orange Blossom Common, Karl Strauss Brewing Company, Carlsbad
- Imperial India Pale Ale: Manta Ray, Ballast Point Brewing, Miramar
- Other Belgian-style Ale: Witty Moron, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens—Liberty Station
- Session Beer: Guillaume, Pizza Port, Ocean Beach
Silver Medals
- American-style Amber or Red Ale: Legally Red, Second Chance Beer Co.
- Baltic-style Porter: Herd of Turtles, Bagby Beer Company
- English-style Summer Ale: Back in the ESSA, Monkey Paw Brewing
- Export Stout: Z-Man Stout, Pizza Port, Carlsbad
- Fruited American-style Sour Ale: Sour Wench Blackberry Ale, Ballast Point Brewing—Home Brew Mart, Linda Vista
- German-style Wheat Ale: Hidden Gem, OB Brewery
Bronze Medals

The proposal during the GABF Awards Ceremony! Nothing is better than beer & love! Congratulations to the happy couple from Wibby Brewing Company!
Seeing Melvin Brewing Company win big, including Large Brewing Group of of the Year! We had the opportunity to try their beers the night before on their bus with them, and it was such a great experience with so many great beers that seeing them win big warmed our hearts!
Getting to taste the award winning beers and see the brewers with their medals during the afternoon session! It was great to see them wearing their new medals with pride, and being able to enjoy the delicious beer that earned them their medals.
