From Operations to Baby Brewer
If you are an avid beer lover, you have probably heard of the Pink Boots Society and have seen pink boots appear at one of your favorite breweries. The Pink Boots Society, or PBS for short, has created an educational and supportive culture in the brewing industry. They have also cultivated a network for collaboration where women can come together and do what they love – work with and around beer. This is made possible through membership, and open to any female beer professional, who shares a passion for the industry. As someone who has focused mainly on guest relations, PBS has helped me to find my love for the hands-on side of the craft.
First Taste of Brewing
I had the privilege of taking part in my first Pink Boots Brewing Day at OddStory Brewing Company, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I was working as the Event Coordinator at the time when the owner’s wife proposed the idea of teaming up with the brewers to create our own Pink Boots beer in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Deciding on a Pink Boots Berliner Weisse, featuring passion fruit and raspberries, we got to work. We slid into our pink boots, mashed in, and helped the entire rest of the way. We also pulled samples and kept a watchful eye on our special creation. It was a memorable and impactful experience for all of us and above all my first taste at brewing.
From Operations to the Mash
Fast forward to March 2018 when I started a new Operations Manager job with Brass Brewing Company, a new brewery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Here I met my new head brewer, Stacy, who had a Pink Boots patch on her brewer’s shirt. She was also ecstatic to learn that I was a member of the organization. She had just taken part in our local Unite Exotic brew day. This is where female brewers from the Colorado Springs area came together to brew the 5th Annual Unite Brew. Unite Exotic was this year’s theme and the result was a delicious RyePA. It included hints of pineapple, guava, and earthy spice. It was also highlighted by a Pink Boots special hop variety blend. Since then, I have helped with other brew days. I was also affectionately named Baby Brewer, or BB Brewer for short.
While I am only starting my brewing journey, and mostly just cleaning the mash tun, I continuously pull knowledge and encouragement from TPBS as well as my local chapter of amazing women working hard in this thrilling industry.
