Our Favorites for National IPA Day

It’s National IPA Day! Although these fictitious holidays may seem a bit trivial, this is one that we can get behind. Every craft brewery is basically required to brew an IPA, especially in San Diego, and we can’t get enough! But where did the IPA come from? In the 1840’s British colonies in India were in dire need for beer from their homeland. The normal lagers could not make the long journey from England to India without expiring. A brewer by the name of George Hodgson’s decided to take on the challenge of providing beer for the thirsty colonies. Determined to produce a beer fit for a long journey, Hodgson’s aged the beer similar to wine and added a lot of hops! The beer was actually a Pale Ale but because of where it was sent, India, it became known as an India Pale Ale (IPA). Although National IPA Day may be a made up holiday, the history behind the beloved IPA is reason enough to celebrate. We’ll be drinking one or more of our favorite IPAs below. Cheers!

Karen Mills: Wolf Pup IPA – Golden Road Brewing

Wolf Pup is one of my favorite IPAs because it’s so sessionable and easy to drink. It has a aromatic tropical and citrus character, perfect for those sunny San Diego days. It’s quite hoppy, but not overly hoppy, and extremely refreshing. Wolf Pup is light in body and not too carbonated, so it’s not ruff on you at all!

Kelly Mahncke: Guava Islander Tropical IPA – Coronado Brewing Co.

Coronado Brewing’s Guava Islander Tropical IPA is bursting with flavor! This is a favorite of mine because it is more than your typical IPA because of the addition of the guava puree. Although the hoppiness is at the forefront, the twist of tropical flavor makes it a refreshingly light IPA. The guava notes in this beer pair extremely well with fresh fish tacos!

Monique Aguirre: Green Hat IPA – Fall Brewing Company

Although I do enjoy a very hoppy beer one of my favorite IPAs is actually very smooth. Fall Brewing Company’s Green Hat IPA is just too easy to drink! You get the citrus and pine flavors IPAs are known for but without super heavy hops. I love pairing this beer with a good joke and slices of Manchego cheese.

William Prickett: Ghost Hammer IPA – Stone Brewing Co.

Ghost Hammer IPA by Stone BrewingMy pick is Stone Brewing’s Ghost Hammer IPA. It is an unfiltered IPA that is made with Loral hops. It’s light and refreshing for an IPA and has a solid mix of floral and pine. There is also a slight citrus note which could pair easily with a salad or something sweet such as lemon cake.

Kristina Martinez: Howler Coffee IIPA – Topa Topa Brewing Co

This beer is only available on draft at their brewery, but I just can’t stop thinking about it! I’m a huge fan of Coffee IPA’s. They are my jam. (Rogue Cold Brew IPA, Stone Mocha IPA, & Kilowatt White-Eyed Willy Vanilla Coffee IPA are honorable mentions in this style.)

Topa Topa Brewing managed to capture the aroma of opening a freshly roasted bag of coffee beans in this beer! On top of an enticing aroma, the flavor is well balanced and smooth, as you would expect from a IIPA. Coffee flavor is there, but not over powering so even if you aren’t a fan of coffee you will enjoy this beer. It will pair well with pretty much anything your imagination can think of from sweet to savory. If you find yourself in Ventura or Santa Barbara, you definitely want to add them as a place to stop so you can get your hands on this delicious beer. Karla Makholm: Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA – Flying Dog Brewery

http://bit.ly/2vlRGT6

One of my favorite IPAs is Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA by Flying Dog Brewery from the East Coast, where I grew up! I’m a huge fan of IPAs, but especially enjoy it when they offer a more complex flavor profile (Seize the Coffee IPA by Second Chance is another one on the top of my list :)). I love how Raging Bitch IPA has funky Belgian yeast notes while still packing a punch in the hops department. Two great styles in one. It’s a unique and slightly spicy IPA that’s great for celebrating special occasions, such as IPA day! This beer would pair well with: margherita pizza, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, and peach desserts like a stone fruit cobbler.
