Exploring Cerveza in Costa Rica!

We recently traveled to Costa Rica to learn more about their beer scene. If you do a google search for craft beer in Costa Rica, a majority of the search results lead you near the San Jose region. Feeling adventurous we ventured to other parts of Costa Rica making stops in Liberia, Monteverde, & Samara. Here are some of our takeaways and tips:

  • DSC05053Three major beer brands that are available at pretty much any restaurant or bar are: Imperial,
Pilsen, & Bavaria. The locals will compare Pilsen & Imperial Silver to Budweiser or Coors in the states, but we would argue that the beers have much more flavor than what Americans tend to think of when they hear that comparison. We tried an assortment of the different versions of the three main beer brands. The two we enjoyed the most were Imperial Silver and Bavaria Gold.
  • Craft Beers are called Cerveza Artesanal and are hard to find at bars and grocery stores.
  • Costa Rica doesn’t have an official Spanish word for brewery.
  • We could not find craft beer in the Liberia area of Costa Rica.
  • DSC05940We discovered a great local beer spot in Monteverde called the Monteverde Beer House. They have one craft beer on draft and then feature a rotating assortment of local craft beers in bottles. They also serve up some amazing Mediterranean cuisine. We tried four different beers during our stop there. A stout on draft then a Red Ale, Blonde Ale, & Scottish Ale in bottles. Our favorites from the group were definitely the Blonde Ale & Scottish Ale. This place accepts credit cards or cash.
  • Our favorite craft beer spot was located in Samara and is called MicroBar. This place had 22 local drafts featuring 6 different breweries throughout Costa Rica. As an added bonus, they also had magical cocktails with our favorite being their Kiwi Leaks! Seriously if you find yourself in Samara, you need to check this place out. We tried an assortment of different styles of beer from the different breweries featured. The top breweries in our opinion were La Selva & Dry Season Brew Lab. The IPAs are tropical and refreshing, not overly bitter or hoppy. The stouts, browns, & porters have the same characteristics you would expect from those beers in terms of aroma and flavor, but are brewed to be a much lighter feeling beer due to the weather in Costa Rica being so humid. This place tends to open around 5pm and is CASH ONLY so be sure to have some on you!
