The Existential Crisis in Finding your Favorite Beer
When you tell people that you write for a beer blog, they always ask you two questions: “Do you get paid in beer?” and “What’s your favorite beer?”
The worst question you can ask me is what my favorite beer is. Why? Because all beer is my favorite. The beer I’m drinking right now is my favorite; the one I had before this was my favorite too. Beer isn’t as much about “favorites” as it is about experiences; yeah sure, you can describe it in terms of hoppiness, bitterness, flavor profile. You could describe it as earthy, oaky, citrusy. You could also describe it as floral, full bodied, or sharp. Do you also know who uses those terms? Vinos, and they’re a snobby bunch.
Having just turned 21, my outlook on beer (and drinking in general) is very unique. Especially as a college student, I was surrounded by Miller Light and Natural Ice’s my entire life. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and place for those. But finally being able to explore the world of craft beers has really opened up my eyes: I am Alice and I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole.
IPA’s, double IPA’s, tarts, saisons, stouts, pilsners, porters; there are so many. And each one is different, and each one is unique. The process of brewing them, the cups they come in, it’s, for lack of a better term, overwhelming…but in a good way. Especially living in San Diego, the Holy Grail of Beers, I’ve been spoiled by the best beers in the world.
But I digress; trying to choose a favorite beer is like trying to choose a favorite child; you love all of them equally, but sometimes you love some more than others at that point in time.
So when I sat down and tried to write to answer this question, I knew I couldn’t do it in the library or at my office. I had to be surrounded by beer; so I packed up my stuff and went to the local lounge, took a look at their beer menu, and chose randomly. Sure, there are beers that I like more than others, and beers that I prefer. But beer is so much more about drinking it and flavor profiles. It’s about the atmosphere, the environment that it cultivates. It’s about having a good time, creating new memories and experiences.
So, to explicitly answer your question, my favorite beer is a Stone Citrisuy Wit, which I happen to be drinking right now. But ask me tomorrow and some other brew will probably be titillating my tastebuds.
