DIY Beer Tour: Tijuana, Mexico
As San Diegans, we’re totally spoiled when it comes to craft beer. It’s been referred to as the “Craft Beer Capitol of America” and with more than 100 craft breweries, we understand why people don’t venture too far to get good beer.
So why would we leave San Diego to drink beer? The world of craft beer is about more than just drinking local. It’s about exploring new places, meeting new people, and a change of scenery while exploring a new culture can be very exciting! Just over the border in Tijuana, the craft beer scene is booming. We love taking the occasional day trip to explore the scene and meet other craft beer lovers!
Here are some of our favorite Tijuana hangouts to drink craft beer with the locals, take in some culture, and get some really tasty food. Everything is within walking distance from the border! So in a way, we guess you could say these Mexican beers are local too.
Colectivo 9: Gastronomia Callejera
Just off of Avenida Revolución (or as locals call “Revo”) is our favorite local watering hole, Barrica 9 Wine & Beer Tasting Room. Tucked away down an alleyway, is where you will find this bar and a variety of hip food joints, altogether known as Colectivo 9. Some of the exciting flavors you will find there are: small-batch empanadas, “Indie” burgers, ceviche, craft burritos, hand rolls, poke bowls, and exotic chocolate truffles for dessert. Barrica is the place to go for beer. With such a good variety of local craft beers, you can spend the afternoon tasting new brews from their rotating tap menu, or in bottles.
What to try here: Anything by Cervezería Insurgente (Tijuana, Mexico), Agua Mala (Ensenada, Mexico), and Cervezería de Colima (Colima, Mexico).
Azteca Craft Brewing
Right on the main drag you’ll find one of Tijuana’s finest breweries, Azteca. We love their beers because they are all consistently good, no matter what kind of beer you tend to lean towards you’ll leave happy. All of their beers we’ve tried have been flavorful, well executed, and balanced. This is a great stop for some mid-late afternoon beers before heading to get your grub on at the famous (and simultaneously well-kept secret) telefonica food trucks!
What to try here: La Rumorosa Coffee IPA, shown above, is the best coffee IPA we’ve ever had! Tons of fresh coffee flavor, a must try if you like your coffee and beer together.
Telefónica Gastro Park
A foodie’s heaven, this spot is for those willing to venture off the beaten path just a little (and it’s totally worth it). In this enclosed “gastro park”, you can sip on Mexican craft beers and wander amongst the established food trucks that are serving up what we consider to be the best food in Tijuana. Try the octopus tacos at Ta’costeño, dig into a smoked sausage at Humo, liven up with some cold brew coffee, and finish off with a cheese board paired with more beer!
What to try here: Cervezería Legión IPA and Honey Orange Wheat (Baja, Mexico)
So if you haven’t taken the trip down to Tijuana yet to explore their craft beer scene ITS TIME! Make sure to stop at these local hot spots and don’t forget your passport!
