Colorado Lawmakers Brew with Hop the Vote!

It’s that time of the year again! Breweries from all around the world are returning to Denver to attend the Great American Beer Festival. At this world renowned competition, they’ll be competing for medals in a variety of beer style categories. This year, another competition will be taking place. Hop the Vote is a friendly but spirited brewing competition that will highlight the relationship between Colorado craft breweries & state lawmakers.

On August 24th, the Colorado House of Representatives team got together with 4 Noses Brewing to create their entry for the competition. Their team includes Representatives Alec Garnett (D-Denver), Hugh McKean (R-Loveland), Kim Ransom (R-Littleton), Jeff Bridges (D-Greenwood Village), and Kevin Van Winkle (R-Highlands Ranch).

“As the beer business evolves, it is clear how crucial it is for us to work well with lawmakers locally and nationally,” said Tommy Bibliowicz, president and brewmaster at 4 Noses Brewing Company. “Participating in an event like Hop the Vote really ties both aspects of this together and embraces the mutual passion and curiosity for great beer that many of us share.”

The brew the House team came up with is called 4 Votes IPA.

4 Votes is a classic take on a bi-partisan IPA and contains 7.1% ABV. The foundation of this IPA is Colorado grown two-row and Munich malt from Proximity Malting. It lends a creamy mouthfeel and a mild level of biscuit-like sweetness. The heavy late addition Amarillo and Simcoe hops to the mix creates a complex and lightly bitter flavor profile. Additionally, its aromatics include bright citrus and pineapple from copious amounts of dry hopping.

The Colorado State Senate team stopped by Renegade Brewing on August 25th to create their entry. Members of this team includes Senators Tim Neville (R-Littleton), Steve Fenberg (D-Boulder), and Chris Holbert (R-Parker).

“It’s an honor to represent members of the Colorado Brewers Guild by engaging our legislators in our industry in a fun and exciting way,” said Renegade Brewing owner Brian O’Connell. “This program shows the importance of craft beer in our state and the commitment of the CBG to work with our legislators to keep our industry strong. We are a vital part of the state’s economy and business leaders and legislators alike can work together to keep it strong.”

The beer that the Senate team came up with is Upper Chamber Haze.

The brewing competition will take over the Colorado Brewers Guild booth at GABF. Until then, the competing brews will continue to ferment as the festival nears. During the first three sessions, team members will be campaigning and pouring the fruits of their labor in the Guild Pavilion. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample the beers and cast their votes at each session. They’ll be announcing the winner of Hop the Vote on October 7th at 3:45 pm! If you’re attending, be sure to swing by to give each a taste and vote for your favorite.
