10 Barrel Brewing Brewpub Officially Opens in San Diego
This past weekend, 10 Barrel Brewing Co. officially opened their newest pub in downtown San Diego, CA. This Bend, Oregon-based brewery has one simple mindset…brew beer, drink beer, and have fun doing it.
To celebrate, they decided to throw a block party and did their best to keep a lighthearted spirit in response to the negativity that has surrounded their opening. For those unaware, the negativity stems from being owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Some of that negativity showed itself when members of the community decided to raise money to fly a banner over the opening claiming, “10 Barrel is Not Craft Beer”. 10 Barrel responded saying they would match any money raised during the event and donate it to a local San Diego charity. They even created t-shirts for their staff that said “Let’s be Friends” as a way to extend a hand.
Message from 10 Barrel Co-Founder
Co-Founder Garrett Wales flew down from Bend to attend the opening festivities. We were fortunate to spend a few minutes with him and get to know him a little better. During that brief amount of time, we could tell how passionate he is about beer and giving back to the community.
“We’re very excited about out new home in San Diego and the revitalization that’s happening in the neighborhood of Makers Quarter. Several bars and craft distilleries are making their way to the area, and we hope our new brewpub positively contributes to the growth and appeal of the East Village.” – Garrett WalesThis acidic bombardment over the esophagus walls cialis brand develops the miserable heart burn, stomach ulcer and esophagus damage efficiently by relieving these parts from the constant hit of acidic moment. The Block Party
You could tell they put a lot of time into the planning of their block party on Saturday, May 27th. They had Moondog Mantiee and The Soft White Sixties perform. Food trucks were lined up outside including: Frida’s Cocina, God Save the Cuisine, and Simply Fresh. They also had multiple beer tents set up, with the intent to donate the proceeds from the event to the San Diego Hunger Coalition. Sadly, not a lot of people showed up for the event.
The brewpub itself was packed the entire time, but the outside block party remained pretty empty. While many members of the San Diego Craft Beer community felt they were sticking it to the parent company AB InBev, they actually weren’t. In fact, what they did ultimately ended up hurting a local charity as the proceeds from the event were going to the San Diego Hunger Coalition. For those that have not yet had a chance to read up about this heated debate, you can learn more about it HERE. Regardless of which side of the debate you fall, the pub is officially open and here is what you can expect.
Pub Details
The space is 9,000 square feet. The pub includes an expansive dining room with seating up to 290 guests and has an open air rooftop with an accompanying bar. Centered around a multi-level brewing system, the new brewpub is open and airy, with metal and wood accents throughout. The brewery has a grain silo that extends above the brewery’s roof and feeds into the brewhouse on the mezzanine below, with the cellar and fermenters on the ground floor. The pub is a family friendly venue. As an added bonus, the patio is dog friendly. The General Manager is James Gomez.
The pub offers a range of signature and San Diego-exclusive beers on tap and a Baja California-inspired lunch and dinner menu. There are 20 taps at each bar (downstairs and upstairs).
The Food
The menu includes: shareable appetizers, hearty salads, tacos, burgers, sandwiches and house-made pizzas. The menu also incorporates San Diego cuisine and local ingredients whenever possible. A great example is the local catch-of-the-day featured in their tacos or as a burger. Tommy Fraioli is the executive chef, formerly of Beaumont’s and Sea Rocket Bistro. He was the winner of the San Diego Wine & Food Festival in 2012.
The Beer
The head brewer is Ben Shirley, a Southern California native who has been with 10 Barrel for six years. 10 Barrel’s brewmaster, Jimmy Seifrit, invited Shirley to join the 10 Barrel team in 2011. Past seasonal brews include Riding Solo and Throwback Oatmeal Stout. Ben will be brewing many beers exclusive to the San Diego pub.
“We are looking forward to serving San Diego’s unique locale by
customizing our beer selection to this city and the on-going progression of the industry. All of our brews will be original creations, with the majority of our taps brewed and consumed on-site. The rest, of course, will come from our other pubs or our production plant in Bend. CHEERS!” – Ben Shirley
Guests at 10 Barrel San Diego can observe the brewing process from mashing to conditioning, thanks to strategic floor and wall openings located throughout the brewpub, as well as a second tier on the grain silo for viewing from the rooftop bar.
In regards to favorite beers…Out of Office Hoppy Pilsner & Cucumber Crush were our two favorite of the evening! Both of these beers are crushable and perfect for a hot summer day! Plus, you really can’t beat an award winning sour. Regardless of who owns them, the quality of 10 Barrel’s beer is high and we have yet to experience a less than stellar beer from them.
Giving Back to Charity
Each month, 10 Barrel will choose a charity to partner with in San Diego to help raise money for the organization throughout that month. 10 Barrel will donate all profits from sales of their Charity T-Shirts to the charity. They will also host an event on the last Tuesday of each month called Charity Tuesday where they will donate the profit made from 5 pm to 9 pm to the charity.
